From Law to Grace
As children, we all have to start with the basics in life, taught to us in rules that are simple to follow. That is; ‘If you do this thing - you will be punished’ but ‘if you do that thing - you will be rewarded’.
As we grow we learn more complicated concepts about life, we are taught the reasons behind the rules.
When we reach adulthood, we are expected to reason for ourselves. That is; to understand why certain things are good or bad, then make our decisions based on the reasons, rather than on a set of rules that we learned as a child.
Paul puts it this way, “When I was a child’ I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me.” (1 Cor. 13:11). This is not just the story of our individual lives, it is the history of mankind!
