Election
‘Election’ is a teaching from the Bible that tells us that God predestined those who would be saved from before the beginning of creation. For many believers, this seems to be a very difficult topic. However, it is a truth that shouldn’t be ignored. It is integral for our understanding of salvation and can impact practically on our lives. From the very beginning of the new covenant church, it was made clear that we enter God's family according to his calling: "Repent and be baptised every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off - for all whom the Lord our God will call." (Acts 2:38-39) Clearly, it says, "for all whom the Lord our God will call." So it is dependant on his calling! Many Christians give testimony that they have 'found the Lord', or that they have 'given their hearts to Christ'. And these attitudes are encouraged by many 'churches'. But are these statements true? “Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Doesn’t he leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it? And when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders and goes home. Then he calls his friends and neighbours together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep.’ (Luke15:4-6) The lost sheep did not find the shepherd - the shepherd found the lost sheep. Should we then believe that we have 'given' ourselves to Christ? We did not give him anything - he paid for us with his blood! "You were bought at a price. Therefore honour God with your bodies." (1 Cor. 6:20 and 7:23) "And they sang a new song, saying: 'You are worthy to take the scroll and to open its seals, because you were slain, and with your blood you purchased for God persons from every tribe and language and people and nation.'" (Rev. 5:9) This is a consistent teaching throughout new covenant Scripture. From the very first of the apostles letters we are told, "We received grace and apostleship to call people from among all the Gentiles to the obedience that comes from faith." (Rom. 1:5) If we are in Christ, it is because we were "called"!
